Hello, I'm looking for someone to help me write an essay on one of the following topics in the files I posted below. Topic: chose one of the 5 below. More than 400 words. Zumthor, Peter, Maureen Oberli-Turner, and Catherine Schelbert. “A Way of Looking at Things.” Thinking Architecture. Basel: Birkhäuser, 2006. Print. 1. The essay, A Way of Looking at Things, begins with the author reminiscing about his grandma’s house. He says, “Memories like these contain the deepest architectural experience that I know” (Zumthor 8). Given that he is an educated and accomplished architect, is it surprising that he relies so strongly on memories? Why or why not? 2. How would you describe the tone of this essay? Does Zumthor’s style and voice seem like that like of a professional architect or more like that of a layperson? Why? Who is his audience? 3. “The design process is based on a constant interplay of feeling and reason. The feelings, preferences, longings, and desires that emerge and demand to be given a form must be controlled by critical powers of reasoning … To a large degree, designing is based on understanding and establishing systems of order. Yet I believe that the essential substance of the architecture we seek proceeds from feeling and insight” (Zumthor 21). How does this relate to the design processes of other architects that you are familiar with? Are there other influences that are more essential than those espoused by Zumthor? [NAAB A.8] 4. Zumthor relates architecture to music in his essay. He then says, “The human ability to invent melodies, harmonies, and rhythms amazes me” (11). In your opinion, is music an apt metaphor for architecture? How so? 5. At one point Zumthor muses “ … we do well to get acquainted with the enormous repository of knowledge and experience contained in the history of architecture” but then he goes on to say that at some moments “ … I try to shake off the academic knowledge of architecture I have acquired because it has suddenly started to hold me back” (23). What is the appropriate role of architecture history and education for a design process? In addition, you will come to class ready to engage articulately in our discussions. Method: A series of discussion questions will be provided to you prior to each meeting.
