1. You may select any group that meets the textbooks definition of a culture. Choose a culture whose behaviors, values, attitudes, world view, etc. are different from your own. This may be a culture based on ethnicity (African American, Native American, etc.) But, do not feel that you are limited to ethnicity. Other examples might be a religious group, a GLBT organization or club, Deaf culture, etc.

2. Next, pick a cultural event to attend, and participate in that is specific to the cultural group you have chosen. It can be a dinner party, a wedding, a festival, a celebration, or a meeting or club activity.

3. After attending the event, you need to interview one of the people who are a part of this cultural group that accompanied you to the cultural event.

4. A written report approximately 7-10 pages typed with a bibliography in APA or MLA format) is required of this experience that includes the following information:

Introduction: (5 Points)

A. Describe the event and the cultural group originating the event. How did you learn of this event and who is the person from this group that invited/accompanied you to this event?

B. Describe your expectations of the event and the cultural group before attending the event.

C. Describe any similar events and/or customs in your culture.

History & Background: (10 Points)

A. Using at least two sources, research the immigration of this cultural group to the U.S.

B. Include historical events that may have shaped this cultural group such as political climate, conflict, migration patterns, etc.

Event Analysis: (10 Points)

A. After attending this event, describe the accuracy of your initial expectations and where did these notions originate (e.g. media, friends, family, etc.).

B. After participating in this event, what do you think might be the major difficulties or conflicts in intercultural communication between people from the cultural group sponsoring the event?

Cultural Values & Beliefs: (15 Points)

A. What are some of the values & beliefs of this culture? Consider the norms of acceptable behavior, rules of conduct, and customs of this culture.

B. Use Geert Hofstede’s theories of value orientations, Kluckhohn & Stodbeck’s framework of cultural patterns, or Hall’s high and low context cultural patterns to describe some of the cultural values and beliefs you observed or learned about.

Interview: (15 Points)

A. Interview a person from this cultural group who accompanied this cultural event with you.

B. Ask questions about the culture, the event, the dynamics between the people involved in the event, and what they feel are the biggest misunderstandings (cultural and/or communication) other people have about their cultural group.

Communication Analysis: (25 Points)

A. Using the four major dimensions of communication styles as identified by Gudykunst & Ting-Toomey, what pattern of communication behavior did you see illustrated either at the event or in your interview?

B. What nonverbal communication patterns did you observe and what do they mean? Who uses them and who doesn’t?

C. In what ways does your cultural group communicate differently or similarly? Please compare and contrast aspects of your culture with this culture.

Conclusion: (20 Points)

A. How did this project help you in understanding more about this cultural group and perhaps the communication patterns of this cultural group?

You may chose cultures other than Chinese culture.

Ex: Indian ,Japanese, ect... should be fine.

I need it to be NO LESS than 10 FULL pages exclude title page and work cited pages.
