I say it all the time, but if you dig deep and plan on making a career out of it, at some point you're going to have to make money doing it. If an NFL player spent all his time training and playing in football games without making any money, he'd be homeless. Do I think it's important to get your work out there? Absolutely. I also believe that the writer should value his own work, in the same way he or she wants others to value it. If some guy walked around handing out free diamonds, the monetary and "I have something you don't" value would decrease for diamonds. When I talk to a publisher, I don't necessarily want them to be able to go on my website and see the same excerpt from a novel that I'm going to give them. I want to play a little hard to get.
