Some suggest that you start talking with your child early about college, even as early as twelve years of age. Leaving it closer to the time when decisions need to be made may make them feel under pressure, and a parent may have to deal with rebellion or indifference.
If you are a graduate of a college, tell your child about your experience as a college student. Get friends or family who are also graduates to talk to your child as well. See what their interests and passions are, and try to relate them to study at college, and the idea of eventually making a career out of it.
Sign up your teenager to take part in some kind of activity which takes place regularly at a college near you. They may get a “feel” for college atmosphere so that it becomes familiar earlier while they do something fun with peers.
There are programs after school that help to prepare students for college. High schools and middle schools often have such programs, so check with your school, including programs that will help prepare them for admissions tests.
