Configure Ubuntu LDAP Client on AWS EC2. Set up Ubuntu to use LDAP server to authenticate user logins.

How to configure an Ubuntu Server/Desktop AWS EC2 instance to use LDAP for user authentication? i.e. Login for SSH and VNC?

What I need is a comprehensive list of commands that I can copy and paste into the default AWS Ubuntu image SSH BASH Shell on first login that enables LDAP authentication for user logins from the LDAP server and comments explaining each command.

Setting up an LDAP server in the cloud is very easy today, but setting up an Ubuntu LDAP client on AWS is currently under-documented on internet forums and in official documentation.

Following the instructions from the websites below:

I have a LDAP server up and running with phpLDAPadmin tested and working

Both the server and client are on Amazon Web Services: Elastic Compute Cloud, virtual machines on the same network and can ping each other, with users in the Posix group on the LDAP server.

But when I follow the instructions for the client configuration I can never seem to make it work, even though I can create and login with new local users, I can never seem to authenticate against the LDAP server:

At first login, Amazon's default Ubuntu image (AMI) is configured to require a pre-generated key to login. This may need disabling, I don’t know.

There exists a turnkey ldap server ami [url removed, login to view]

An AWS account is required to setup ldap server and client. Setup a LDAP server image instance and a Ubuntu image instance. Install ldap client on Ubuntu and configure so that you can login to Ubuntu as a user that is listed in the LDAP server and not locally. And what I want is basically: Write down how you did it so that I can understand and repeat the process.

I want to be able to create a new instance on AWS EC2 and use a centralized server for logins, so that I can use the same AWS image for multiple users, without having to make changes to the Ubuntu image every time I need to create a new user.

I don’t know if I am having issues with basic Ubuntu or with Amazon’s specific configurations. I have tried numerous ways and have received numerous errors. What the internet needs is comprehensive documentation on Ubuntu LDAP client configuration on AWS EC2.

VNC or NX may require creation of a home directory upon first login. Please help with this as well.
