Develop a simple finite volume one dimensional, time dependent model in cylindrical coordinates to solve the heating produced by RF currents leaving from an active electrode.
The radius of the active electrode is 0.75 mm. The outer surface of the electrode has a voltage V =100 volts and a temperature Ti=5 C. Far from the electrode (ro = 0.1 m) the voltage is zero and the temperature of the tissue is the basal temperature Ta+q˙m/(ρaωCa), where Ta=37◦C.. The tissue has electrical conductivity σ = 0.188 S/m. The thermal properties of the tissue are k = 0.512 W/m·K, ρ = ρa = 1000kg/m3, C = Ca = 3600 J/kg·K and ω = 0.0005 s−1, and ˙qm=700 W/m3.
Determine how long it takes for the tissue to reach a temperature of 100◦C. Plot the temperature profiles of the tissue at different times up to the time at which it reaches 100◦C.
Use Arrhenius method to determine the volume of tissue damaged by the time the tissue has reached 100◦C.
Compare your results using two different mesh divisions: 20 finite volumes and 200 finite volumes in the radial direction.
I attached a matlab code that can be used to solve the problem, along with some notes to help with the problem.
