(I posted this once before but unfortunately I became unable to work on the project shortly after posting it. I am now back and ready to get it started. Apologies to anyone who previously bid on this project, I had no intention to let it lapse.)
I've got a client who is building a website for a coin shop in San Diego, California. The site layout is still in progress but is coming together pretty well. They're happy with everything with the exception of one aspect.
They want a real-time quote for Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium to appear on the homepage whenever a visitor comes to the site. You can see an example of this functionality here: [login to view URL] (where it says "New York Spot Price" on the homepage).
I've checked into the source code of that website but I'm not technical enough to find out how they are accomplishing that real-time data display on their homepage. I did find a page that contains the raw data they're using, but I can't find where the website is getting that specific data ( [login to view URL] )That is the functionality we want to duplicate on our own site. Both the example website above and my client's site are Wordpress-based websites.
Here is our URL: [login to view URL]
Right now, I have a placeholder text where I want the real-time metals quotes to go. That is where I would like to have the actual quotes show up. We would also like to incorporate this realtime quoting on other pages on the site, possibly in the sidebars.
However the task is accomplished, it must be loadable across all browsers, including the iPad and iPhone. I do not want a solution that relies on Flash or some sort of third party plugin. I am aware we could simply "tap into" the competitor's website's data stream that I listed above but I am unwilling to do so since they're likely paying a premium for that service and it would be unethical for us to use that without paying.
A likely solution is to program a script that checks the current spot prices from the website KitCo ( [login to view URL] ) and formats them in a visually pleasing way. Whatever the end solution is, we'd like it to dynamically update as long as a visitor is on the page.
