We have a new CMS application where we imported data from the databases of multiple websites. Some of these websites were using utf8 encoding while others were using iso-8859 etc. After the import, some of the content has been edited and some are same as before. We have the old as well as new databases. We would like a PHP script, which can: 1. Take the new database (one column each from a few tables) and detect its encoding and convert them all into utf8 2. Ensure that the data has no special or non-printable characters left.

Dear Mr/Mrs, I am a Senior Software Engineer with vast experience in infrastructure and dev ops. I see 3 ways to solve your problem: 1) Use a PHP script as you request to get data from the source with some encoding (i.e. ISO-8859) and propagate it to the target database encoded in UTF8. 2) Use a MySQL script to convert the data into the database. 3) Use MySQL utils (such as mysqldump) and shell scripting. Unless you require it, I would prevent to use high level languages such as PHP, as other considerations may be needed. If possible the conversion should happen in a temporary database before getting the final result. Also, you should consider how the data is read from the database, because if MySQL keeps UTF8 data and you should not setup PHP to handle the same encoding your result will not be as expected in the front-end.
