alternative port wordpress auto update fix.

Hi
my wordpress site is running on a linux vps
with an alternative port, not 21 or 22.
The problem is when it comes to auto wordpress plugin/theme updates.
It asks for the root access level password etc.
But there is nowhere to enter the PORT to connect to the server.
So I can never do any auto updates.
Ive googled and tried the solutions that show up.
But none work
DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE SORTING THIS PROBLEM OUT.
