This is probably a lost cause because it it's so esoteric, but I thought I'd try anyway. There may be some genius out there that knows this already.
The latest version of McAfee VirusScan (8.0) uses some kind of encryption or obfuscation to store their version information in the registry. I only want to be able to read this data to display some information so the user knows what version of McAfee they have installed without loading up the software or opening the About menu. This is for entirely legal purposes.
Older versions of McAfee VirusScan stored the information in plain text so it was easier to read. Not sure why they started encrypting it except to make my life harder!
I've included the export of the registry, but that's all I can offer. So it may help if you had a copy of the software.
An example to look at is the "VersionInfo" entry at the top. This seems to use the same method as all others. The first 4 letters are "MCRG", or in hex: 4d435247. This seems to be some type of header to ID the data contained in the entry.
Please only bid if you're 100% sure you can do this. I don't want to pick someone who just says they can, but not be able to while I missed someone that really could have. A sample EXE would be best.
I only need the very basic code to do this. I don't need any kind of registry reading code or a full app. You can just use the registry text file I provided and decode one entry by pasting the raw hex into VB. No real parsing is needed. I don't know how much clearer I could be.
Thanks!
