I have created an archive for a custom post type and I want to implement an A-Z index filter which will filter posts depending on the selected letter. Example, When a user selects 'A', it returns posts whose title begin with A. If no posts exists for that letter then a message will display informing the user no posts belong to the selected letter
I know that this will involve the posts_where filter and possibly query vars but I don't know how to connect the two.

The only question in this I have at the moment is do you want this sorting done in the manner when a user clicks A the listing changes in the list like done with jquery and Ajax or would it be okay if user clicks on A and a new page opens with its results?
We can do both but the second one can be done quickly within this budget.
