Creating a similar site

This is more a less a fact finding post. Is it possible to create a clone of a site like GAF but yet make it different I like the concept of this service and I suppose if the price to create a fully functional site like this was no to expensive then I will entertain the thought of having it done. I am looking for a site that will require minumal work to maintain once it has established in the search engines. Of course will make me money is the bonus so give me some thoughts on a project like this as I do not do this for a living I am uncertain as to what is envolved on the backend or database.
