I would like to get an AR App that run some 3d content but the difference is that i will not use an image or object as marker (trigger) I would like to use an Infrared sensor in order to detect when someone stand up in front of the display and run the animation.. Something like this [login to view URL] But I think they (at the video) are using a second camera in order to detect when people arrive at the bus stop and start the animation.

You could use a simple Infra Red proximity sensor. Using this it will detect any objects come closer to your sensor. So, it could be programmed using using arduino.
