I think Servo motor will be best suitable for Ur application - DC Motor will Need Driver & Position control is difficult - Position sensor will be required for angular position measurement

I work on motors and arduino on daily basis. Actually I didn't understand your project. You are telling that you are using DC motors and you want a 180 degree apart. I didn't understand that part. Can you enlighten me with more details so that i can understand what you are trying to achieve. I think using a motor controller module is more easy than using mosfets. and also to control LEDs we don't need any thing than a arduino PWM pins. Flashing LEDs and fading the lights can do very easily using PWM pins. When using a motor controller the speed can be easily control so it is better to use motor control unit. and also i need a clear picture about this project ,with sketches and hardware.
