Below is a sample of my work. A review of the film Ragnarok:
Thor: Ragnarok :Movie Review
Thor Ragnarok was directed by Taika Waititi the man behind ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ and ‘What We Do In The Shadows’. Two films I absolutely love so it's very exciting to see how he did with a Marvel movie. I love superhero films and couldn’t wait to see how Waititi’s unique Direction would blend into the Thor Franchise.
When it comes to Thor Ragnarok this film does for Thor or what Captain America the Winter Soldier did for the Captain. This film is exactly what Thor needed. It needed a huge boost of fun and likeability. What Ragnarok does is take everything that we know about Thor and it dismantles it. His hammer, forget about it, it’s gone. His macho sense of right and wrong? Simply reduced to comedy. But it also keeps the heart of his character intact. Family dynamics, the struggle with his brother and his father. Now there’s a new thing he has to deal with in Hela played excellently by Cate Blanchett. There was not one specific character that stole the show for me because everyone did such a great job that all stole the movie. I guess that’s what happens with a star studded cast. This is one of my favourite Marvel movies. It’s everything you want to see in a superhero film. This is easily the best of the Thor franchise.
According to Taika Waititi over 80% of the movie was improvised which remarkable considering just how well crafted it feels. It really shows just how much time Waititi must have spent talking with the actors to get this level of cohesion. The timing of the film’s humour is stop on. Even when there is a serious moment it will be played for a joke. Another thing I enjoyed was the fact that Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song” features heavily throughout the film scoring all the action sequences. It wasn't just in the trailer. So often you hear songs in the trailer only for it to never make an appearance in the actual film. I’m so glad they incorporated the song in some awesome moments of the film.
You actually get to see Thor being the god of thunder, not just calling down lightning bolts with his hammer. This film constantly side stepped those expectations that we go into films with to create a fresh experience.
There were a few issues that i found with the movie. There are a lot of jokes in the film and at times yes it seemed a few too many. Or rather it was the placement of the jokes that gave it that appearance. I found that I had laughed so much that I couldn’t laugh any more and found myself wishing for time to process a little. It’s a minor thing and didn’t effect, for me anyway, the pacing of the film. Also Hela, while great, at times her character could be a real expositional mouthpiece. She would do this through showing art on the ceiling explaining her back story. She would be talking a lot to executioner explaining what happened to her in the past but really it was all for the viewers benefit to catch up on her story. I don’t have a problem with this as i didn’t know much about her to begin with. There is alot to her back story but i can see others who know the story getting a little annoyed that it is in there.
Verdict
In this film Thor becomes a more likeable, more interesting and more relatable character. The character progression in this film I feel for Thor was spot on. The new cast did a fantastic job especially Cate Blanchett who really stole the show when she was on screen. Taika Waititi’s first attempt at a Marvel film was an outstanding success. Ok so he had nothing to lose if it flopped but the fact that it didn't should be celebrated. Many see it as Marvel’s best film yet. While I’m not quite ready to jump on that bandwagon. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was beautifully shot, had awesome music and Thor's much needed haircut didn't go unappreciated. and It is definitely worth a watch.
