Remote Freelance Publishing QA Specialist

A Publishing Quality Assurance (PubQA) Specialist relies on a keen eye for detail and strong proofreading expertise to perform QA of translated documents prior to client delivery. Executing this QA process involves comparing a source language document against a target, translated language document (e.g., comparing an English file to a new version of the file that has been translated into French), and using software-based commenting tools to add notes to the files highlighting or correct any discrepancies -- such as, differences in formatting, font usage, pagination and numerical values. The goal of the Quality Assurance Specialist is to indicate any and all instances where a target file should be altered in order to more perfectly serve as a mirror of the original source file. A person who is not fluent in the languages involved should be able to look at the finished product and understand how the two documents correspond. Applicants will be required to take a QA/proofreading proficiency test. Overview of how remote freelancing as a PubQA resource at Language Scientific (LS) works: When a PubQA job is available, a member of the Technical Services team at LS will contact you via email with a list of available assignments. You'll be able to review each assignment's start time, due date, and estimated length of time required to complete. If you are available and interested in claiming an assignment, please respond back confirming. We will then assign you the task in our online Vendor Portal Tech Scheduler - a web portal we use to manage and distribute all of our assignments. In the Vendor Portal Tech Scheduler, you will be able to download new job files and upload completed job files. The duration of each assignment and the turnaround time vary greatly but the best part about this arrangement is that the degree of freedom you have over your schedule. If you do not have the time to work on an assignment, you do not have to take the assignment. SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Proofreading and editing skills  Excellent time management skills  Extremely detail-oriented  Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Undergraduate degree, preferably in language arts or the humanities (or in the process of acquiring a degree)  Proofreading, editorial or writing experience  Basic understanding of document formatting conventions (fonts, type sizes, etc.)  Applicant must have a working computer with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe PDF PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:  Reading fluency in a foreign language  2-3 years experience as a professional/contract/freelance proofreader ABOUT Language Scientific is a US-based translation services company.
