I need to apply for a grant , something that can used in the classroom that has educational value. It can be technology or any other educational relevance. It must include: Title Introduction to the Grant Transmittal Letter Description The transmittal letter is a short, one- or two-page letter written and signed by the senior officer in your school district. Its purposes are to introduce the proposal and to assure the potential funders that the district supports the proposal. By signing the transmittal letter, the senior officer agrees to stand behind the promises and commitments made by the investigators who wrote the proposal. _____________________________________________________________________________- Title Title Page Description A title page is a sparse page resembling the top page of a business report or the top sheet of a college research assignment. At a minimum, the title page should include: • The project’s title • The name of the company or institution submitting the proposal • The date The title page may also include additional information such as the amount of money requested or the names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and FAX numbers of the investigators. Because the title page serves as a graphic organizer, enabling easy and quick identification of your proposal, and because yours is likely to be one of many proposals being evaluated, brevity is essential. _____________________________________________________________________- Title Purposes, goals and objectives Description PURPOSES, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES Purposes are global statements used to explain the general expectations of the funder. Goals are used to break the purposes down into parts, so, goals are broken down into objectives, which are much more specific. Each objective should be a short statement with an action verb written in the present or future tense. Get a copy of your school district’s mission statement. Examine it for goals. Write one or two specific objectives indicating exactly how you and your unit can help reach each goal. Time spent improving your understanding of your district’s mission is time well spent. A clearer understanding of this mission can bring clarity and power to your proposals. ________________________________________________________________________ Title Timetables Description Funders always want to know the different stages in the project. When can you begin implementing the project? How long will each stage take? If the project has several steps or phases, it is the investigator’s (grant writer’s) responsibility to make a clear distinction between each phase and inform the funder as to when each phase will begin and end. Because funders often have many proposals to consider, failure to communicate the different phases and the time frame for each can be disastrous. Like incomplete proposals, unclear proposals usually get pushed aside and end up in the rejection pile. The flowchart is also an excellent tool to show the evaluators your sequence of events and when you expect to begin and end each event. As you assign the time for each phase, remember that funders give their support because they have a job they want to get done. If there is an urgency to get the program into operation, then the evaluators will be sensitive to the time frame and may be highly influenced by the ability of some investigators to complete the job sooner than others. This suggests that you should be ready to implement the first phase of your project as soon as you learn that it has been funded. But remember also that the funders demand quality work, so be sure allow as much time as you deem necessary to do a good job. The goal here is to present a timetable showing that you are ready to begin implementing your project, and once you begin, you will move the project forward from one phase to another, without unnecessary delays, until it becomes operational ____________________________________________________________________________ Title SUSTAINABILITY Description Another factor to consider is extending the timetable to show your plans to continue the program after the funder’s support is withdrawn. Obviously, not all grant proposals are written to establish programs, so providing information on how you plan to sustain your program once the funds dry up is not listed as a proposal part on the checklist provided later in this hapter. If, however, your proposal does involve establishing a program or an ongoing service, having a clear statement on how you propose to keep your program alive could be one of the most influential parts of your proposal. Grant funders know that for a very high percentage of programs, once the funding ends, the programs immediately die. Title EVALUATION Description Most RFPs require the investigators to arrange for external evaluators to make comprehensive assessments of their programs. Others, such as pri- vate donors and family-owned foundations, permit the investigators them- selves to conduct the evaluations. When given the choice between conducting the evaluation yourself and hiring an external evaluator, seriously consider the latter choice. Regardless of how objective and accurate your own evaluation might be, it is always subject to suspicion; therefore, it is usually far better to commission a third party. Always select a company or evaluation consultant with no connections to your school district. Title Budget Description Include a sample budget here. it will probably change before the grant is actually submitted for funding. Title Abstract Description The abstract is the last part of the proposal developed. An abstract is a short description of the proposal. Some grant writers make distinctions among the abstract, summary, program summary, project summary, program narrative, and executive summary; others do not. It is said that some nationalities do not care what you say or do as long as you say it correctly. Grant writing is concerned with both what you say and what you do . The important thing to remember is that it is the funder who calls the shots. You can also call a few shots as long as you respond to every one of the funder’s calls. Some funders require an abstract, others do not. Check your RFP. If an abstract is required, (1) use the term contained in the RFP, and (2) follow the specifications precisely . Most RFPs requiring abstracts specify required lengths (e.g., Include a 250-word abstract.). This 250-word requirement is meant to be a maximum length.
