Hi,
*I would like to request a quote for a working prototype to automate a temporary manual work, not a machine for industrial production! Therefore, it can require manual intervention: simply making my work easier is enough, it doesn’t have to be an industrial machine!*
IN SHORT:
I need a machine allowing me to create dental floss circles (by making a knot, welding/melting the extremities together, gluing the extremities...whatever!)
OBJECTIVE:
My goal is undertake a market test: I want to test if people would use a dental floss that comes in a circle, currently it’s not on the market. I would do this by giving free samples. For this test I would like to produce 60’000 "circles" (I would give 50 packs, with 60 “circles” in each, to 20 dentists = 60’000 circles).
PLEASE NOTE: the machinery is not for industrial production, but only an alternative to tying the floss by myself (tying by hand = unhygienic + very time consuming). As far as I know, such an equipment is not on the market (hence: the need to do it myself).
INPUT / OUTPUT:
The input of the machine is a simple coil (about 50 meter or 54 yards is the standard) of floss as you can find in the supermarket; the output should be a circle of about 15cm (about 6 inches). Alternatively the input can be a floss segment (i.e.: I cut the pieces of the right length and the machinery ties them. Please see the picture for the desired output (in the picture it’s tied, it doesn’t necessarily has to be a knot! Read on).
CLOSING:
The way you close the circle is indifferent: it can be:
-a knot/node/tie,
-a welding/melting,
-a tip of glue,
-other
The simplest way, yet a strong one, is the preferred one.
MATERIAL:
Dental floss can be of many materials, here I list the ones I found but there can be more:
-Terylene
-Nylon
-UHMWPE
-PTFE
-Teflon
It might be that one material works best for knotting, while another works best for welding/melting. Once the best ‘closing’ solution is found, I will provide the correct material if necessary.
TIME HORIZON:
I don’t have any deadline as this is a personal project. But please do provide a time estimate to complete the project, on top of price.
Hello, thank you for posting this project. I could make such a machine for you. I would choose to connect ends by melting, for which UHMWPE is probably the best material. Of course this was just my first thought. I'd need to do some research before I start designing the machine.
BTW Teflon and PTFE are the same material. Teflon is a commercial name of the substance whose standard chemical name is PTFE. Just FYI.

Thank you for the invitation to bid. I have studied the requirements and I can get this machine made for you. Though I understand that it is not a industrial machine but any custom machine development takes a lot of effort hence it cannot be done in the project budget as mentioned by you hence I have quoted an approximate amount.
As for the process it will be welding of the joints as that is more suitable for the purpose. Also I have one question which got me confused. What it means by "60’000 circles" I mean 60'000 is not any standard unit.
