Currently have an Oracle Forms 6i document control system. This uses Oracles OLE2 automation to create and store Word documents in an Oracle 10Gr2 database.

Oracle "wraps" the OLE document when storing it in the database and we regularly run into problems where the document becomes currupt and can't be re-opened. As a stop-gap, we implemented code last November to take a file-system backup of each document after each access of the document during which the document has been saved.

So, for example, document 37332, created in June '06, will be stored as a BLOB in a database table, and there will also be a copy of it n:\temp\bk200606\doc37332_20060616104520.doc. This is in the format: "doc..ref..YYYYMMDDHHMISS"

I'd like to change this system to run from a web-server (preferably suse-linux/apache/php) and store the documents as .docs outside the database. However, the users like the fact that their changes etc are captured immediately. They do not want to have to "download" documents for editing and then "upload" after making changes.

I believe similar functionality as to that provided by the Oracle Forms can also be provided by using Javascript and OLE automation.

Is this so, and, if so, can you do it, and what size of project do you think it would be? Do you have example websites with similar functionality?

If its possible, I'll write up a detailed specification and post a new bid request.
