Disclaimer: this is a COMMERCIAL PROJECT, not a homework assignment. I work in a lab with tens of thousands of dollars, and this is to build a practical device, not some plea for homework help. I have a degree in mathematics, not physics and sometimes like to double-check my work with others. I am designing a device that bends an ion beam (from a liquid metal ion source )to inject it into the next stage of an assembly. I need help with some of the conceptual/theoretical aspects of an ion beam in a time-varying magnetic field, because I'd like to anticipate all of the forces involved before these expensive parts are fabricated, including a 10T+ cryogenic electromagnet. In the current assembly, a high-brightness beam of gallium ions is directed, with nearly homogenous velocity and negligible divergence, away from the liquid metal ion source. While in flight, the ions will be subject to a magnetic field, so timed as to redirect them at a 90 degree angle (i.e. the magnetic field (homogenous) is "on" for 1/4 the cyclotron period). Are there forces involved here which will make the beam diverge? That is, I know background neutrals will ruin the divergence (we use turbo molecular pumps and keep it pumped down to UHV). Space charge effects and Coulomb effect also seem unlikely to alter the divergence of the beam. The project is simply to list any effects (especially bulk effects) that I may be missing in quantifying the behavior of the ion beam in this injector. Naively, if the magnetic field is perfectly homogenous and is active for 1/4 the ion cyclotron period, the ion beam should be redirected 90 degrees. Are there any processes which will hinder that, that I need to account for in my design?

Hi, I am a physicist with a Master degree in nuclear fusion. Most of my work in the field consists in the theoretical study of charged particles' (plasma) trajectories in complex magnetic fields. Your set-up is quite similar to what's use to heat the plasma of such devices as the ones used for nuclear fusion experiments. In order to make a full analysis of your set-up, I'll go through the gyrokinetic equation (could be sufficient), the divergence of the beam, the relativistic contribution (probably negligible) and some more phenomena that might modify the predicted trajectory (if you provide me with the required data obviously.) I am an astrophysics professor. I have been teaching an electricity & magnetism course for the last 17 years. I am currently working on something very similar; can't say much on about it.
