Civil engineer: Frame analysis by manual and software ​computations by using staad pro


Structural analysis is an integral part of structural design and it becomes essential for a structural designer to understand the concepts underlying the behaviour of a structure. There are some useful software tools apart from hand calculations, which can minimize the laborious iterative methods in analysis. However, it entails a clear and distinct understanding and interpretation of the results obtained by software tools. Therefore, hand-methods provide an independent check on the answers obtained from computer analyses.

In this context, an architectural plan of the school block of a proposed residential school having ground plus one storey, at Al Ansab, is given.

Figure 1 shows a typical floor plan indicating the different components of the selected building along with column grid lines.

Figure 2 shows the section and elevation of the school building.

Considering no stiffening effect of the frame due to cladding of walls perform complete analysis by following the tasks below.

1.​Draw to a proper scale (hand drawn), the structural framing plan showing the beam-​column layout.

2.​Sketch the tributary areas of load distribution on slabs adjoining only the frame assigned ​to you. Calculate all the loads and show clearly the details of loading frame.

3.​Calculate the flexural rigidity of the members and the rotational contribution factors at the ​joints.​

4.​Demonstrate Kani’s rotation contribution ​method to determine the final ​moments. Show the detailed ​calculations for the moments due to rotation contribution for ​at least two cycles and also for the calculation of final moments.

4.​Sketch the moment diagrams for beams and columns and indicate the value of moments ​clearly. ​​​​​​​​ [Weightage 10 %]

5.​Model the frame assigned to you using a standard software such as Staad Pro/ Etabs/ ​SAP and show output results. ​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​​​ [Weightage 10 %]​

6. ​Write a summary of results obtained from hand calculations and from software output ​compare the results for any variation and write briefly the critical analysis of your ​findings. ​​​​​ [Weightage 20 %]


The columns are rigidly connected to the foundation and there are no plinth beams at the foundation level

Consider the thickness of floor slab as 180 mm and the thickness of roof slab as 120 mm.

Consider the thickness of walls over the beams as 200mm wherever applicable.

Consider all columns as square columns of 300mm side
