My name is João Neto.
I am a freelance translator. I live in Portugal and my mother languages are Portuguese and French. As an academic background, I have a BA in Modern Languages and Literatures (English and French), an MA in Compared Medieval Literatures and a PhD in Contemporary Compared Languages and Literatures from by the New University of Lisbon and the Université de Tours, in France. I also have a Post Graduation (specialization) in Technical Translation (Portuguese, English and French) from the New University of Lisbon, and have experience in translating full-time. I graduated in 1994 and took up a job as a teacher in high schools. After my Post graduation in Technical Translation, I assumed a part-time job as a freelance translator for a few agencies throughout Europe and the United States, mainly working via Internet. In the meantime, I was invited by a Portuguese public university to create a Portuguese for Foreigners course, which I assumed as a second job parallel to translation. I regularly undertake projects sent by agencies and specialized enterprises that range from simple 1.000-word assignments to huge 100.000 word translations that I often deal with using Trados 6.0 CAT tool.
My technical formation is backed by my military experience as an air force pilot, where I attended Officer Training Program and flight school. As a pilot, I had many fields I had to master to properly fulfill my obligations, so I took extensive medical training, IT formation, electronics and communication, strategy, physics, chemistry, geometry, powering systems, navigation and instrumentation. Then I’ve decided to completely change my business, keeping my flight permit but only using it as a hobby.
I am currently a freelance translator working in various fields, such as law/legal (which I have done for Lloyds Trust Funds International for a few months), engineering (aeronautics, mechanical, industrial, mining, automotive), military, health (medical, pharmaceutical), education, journalism/advertising and IT (software, hardware), consumer goods (user manuals, adverts, newsletters), etc.
I am meticulous, resourceful, versatile, I take pride in my work and I always meet (sometimes anticipate) deadlines. My past clients have shown their extreme satisfaction with my work.
