Opis Konkursu

Design an Electrically Driven Clamp (EDC)

In this challenge, you are asked to design an Electrically Driven Clamp (EDC) that will be mounted to, and driven by, a separately designed robotic arm. The EDC receives electrical power (i.e., an applied voltage) that it must convert into the desired actions. This contest is focused on the electro-mechanical system only (i.e., no internal computing or circuitry)

How it works: Initially, the EDC will be positioned at a Handrail, in a ready-to-clamp orientation.. When powered and controlled, the EDC must be capable of executing three high-level actions:

1) close on the Handrail,
2) maintain a hold on the handrail for an extended period of time, and
3) release from the handrail.

Click on the links below to see detailed design instructions, constraints and solution templates for this problem.

Challenge rules:
The prize will be awarded for the lowest mass, technically feasible solution, submitted by the contest deadline.
No working prototype is required for submission, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design (i.e., comply with all requirements) and the credibility of your mass estimate.
Only complete submission packages will be evaluated.

Opinie o Pracodawcy

“Marco Saul C. developed an innovative design for an electrically driven clamping mechanism. This was a contest and this design was selected from 16 entries as the most feasible and least mass design. Marco Saul C. provided a thorough design submission and was very helpful in the final handover and product delivery.”

Please join us in congratulating Marco Saul C. as the winner for this challenge. Thanks to all of the participants for all of your hard work on this challenge. Sorry for the delay in announcing the winner. The judging panel was very impressed with the submitted designs and the evaluation was quite difficult.

This contest is now closed. Thank you for all of your hard work on some really great designs. The team will be evaluating the submissions and announcing the winners as soon as we can (likely about 1-2 weeks). There are several other contests currently active with even more launching this month. We look forward to seeing more of this amazing talent! Thanks!

In the EDC Submission Guidelines, section 4.2 Operating Modes, the minimum requirement says the table should have four rows for unpack, close, release & pack. I think it should rather be just two rows for close and release as described earlier in the section. Am I right?

You are correct, two rows for just close and release. That was an error in our submission guideline writing.

    #extended please
btw and the front page it said the contest will be closed on 6 August 13:00 GMT, but on the right top corner of this page, it say the time left is 6 day and 17 hours, I think there's miss calculation on this

and on the PDFit say will be closed at 6 August 21:00 GMT.

    which one is correct?

Hi, is the size of the cut off in the Pre-attached configuration should be exact same size as the Figure 2, or I can define my own size as long as it have cut-off and not exceed the external size (102*114*40)

and what the meaning of this? "The MDC shall have no loops of material greater than 25.4 mm in diameter"

    Thank you

For your first question, that cutout is explicitly designed and you are not allowed to design your own cutout.

For your second question, this is meant to describe wires, strings or threads that could catch on things in the ISS.
