Clean Up Wordpress, Design New Home Page, Work With API

We're looking for a Wordpress expert (or expert team) to help us complete the overhaul of [url removed, login to view], the website of a church in Washington, DC. The project will have three main objectives:

1) to clean up the Wordpress implementation left behind by another team

2) to completely redesign the home page (the sub pages are fine, and the theme is fine, we just need the home page itself redesigned)

3) to work with an outside REST API to automatically populate certain areas of the site

PER OBJECTIVE ONE:

This website was originally designed by someone else several years ago, and put onto the LightCMS platform. This year, we decided because of the significant expense of LightCMS, and the fact that Wordpress is so widely supported, that we would move everything over to Wordpress. To complete this transition from LightCMS to Wordpress, we hired an outside service to complete the work for us. But the way they went about the implementation looks very messy, and not intuitive. We need you, with your expertise, to "clean up" this implementation, since we're relying on the fact that you know the best practices of implementing WP.

-They put a heavy amount of the content into "widgets".

-They did not properly adapt the theme, it is using something called "designfolio" instead of a custom theme for us. Perhaps there is a reason for this, but you'll need to let us know why, or fix it to what it should be

-The menus do not all work properly, and some headers/footers not easy to update

-The way they used sidebars is mysterious

-The site is now extremely confusing for our staff to update, especially on the home page, we don't know where to update it

-The CSS feels clunky and not particularly elegant/clean, as if the divs and attributes are not consistently used

-The CSS occasionally looks weird in some of the menus (especially the left menu in the sub pages), or is not perfectly aligned, or not perfectly centered

-The responsive design aspects of the CSS seem sloppy

-Our users cannot easily add tables to any of the pages

PER OBJECTIVE TWO:

Our home page really needs to be redesigned, as it currently is very clunky, does not emphasize the right content, and wastes a lot of space. The overall aesthetic of the site can stay (the tan, red menu, etc) since the sub pages will all stay the same, but the layout of the home page needs to be a much better initial impression and conduit to the rest of the content on the site (like a good portal). Right now, some of the problems include that the photo carousel doesn't seem properly sized, that major content is sitting out in random places (such as the current "mclendon scholar in residence" area), fonts don't always seem to be the best size, a brown strip across completely separates upper and lower portions of the page, upcoming events is too small and below the fold, and many more problems..... if you are a good designer, you'll see what we mean. The footer seems to be fine.

- should have upcoming events above the fold

- better social media outreach

- should have a place for a video

- we can get some better photos of the church for you, including our Emancipation Proclamation draft, Lincoln Pew, famous stained glass windows, and other distinctive portions of the building and grounds

- home page should allow us to add/remove major topic areas easily, such as special initiatives or events

- make sure the home page is efficient and loads quickly

- make the home page much more easy to update

- make sure the home page uses responsive design like the rest of the site

- make sure new home page still fits in with the rest of the site
