Categories locked in Magento 1.6

The error is in the category management in backend. I can see all the categories and sub-categories, including mark and edit some of them. I can’t however mark and edit all categories, at least 50% of all categories are “locked”. When clicking on them they get marked in the category list, but the right side of the site doesn't update. It still says “New root category” or the name of the last working category.
I’ve found several people with the same issue, but nothing i’ve and other Magento "experts" tried so far have worked.
The categories have been imported from osCommerce, but when I check in the database manually i can’t find any difference on the imported and manually created, and working categories. So i don’t think that’s the problem.
Might be something with ajax/js that’s the problem, but I can't get any further. Also 3 freelancer have tried and failed...
To bid on this project, you should know that this is a multiple store with 4 shops, and 3 of the are live. You have to find the problem and also fix it (unlock the locked categories). We are very short of time I'm afraid.
