INVESTIGATE A QUESTION:
Basically- you are providing the rest of the class a cultural object to focus on for discussion. In order to do that- it's good to provide some line of inquiry that can begin the process of the critical practice. The purpose of this assignment is for you to pose questions from which we can start the critical looking and visual analysis.
When you present- focus on the object and how it has shifted in meaning.
Example1: How is it an example of a shift in the way we understand touch? Color? Luxury? Poverty? Etc. Remember that we are discussing from the point of how something exemplifies a shift from preconceived ideas to other sets of ideas.
Example2:
The turntable- it shifted from being a record player to a music instrument. By doing so- everything it produces (music and the subculture it helped form) has changed aesthetically.
Try to use aspects of the readings provided as frameworks through which to discuss the object.
The presentation is short- no more than 5-10 minutes. Your write up should be a more detailed analysis of the object. I am not looking for a historical overview of the object presented but rather a focused line of questions pertaining to what is assumed about the object and how that is (or has been) challenged by its hybrid evolution.
Some examples of previous student presentations:
• The selfie – is it portraiture? How does it change the idea of the portrait? How does it redefine the idea of the “pose?”
• Changes in design of car upholstery. Why has there been a shift in design from “natural” patterns to “digital” patterns? Does this present a new kind of digital aesthetic?
• Logo designs. Current designs of logos treat the words as images rather than text. How does this alter the way we read/see images and text?
• The iPhone and the grid. How does the gridded visual structure of the phone define our experience of social interaction?
