Drupal 8 Paid Membership Monthly/Yearly Subscriptions

Have a Drupal 8 website in production that needs a recurring subscription option which grants/revokes a role to a user. We want people to still be able to register for an account which gives them access to all of the free features but they will have the ability to subscribe to a paid membership which grants them a role. The role will control if the member sees premium content only available to those subscribers who have paid.
Needs options for both monthly/yearly pricing and ability to collect payments through a processor like stripe and renewal email reminders. One the users subscription expires the role needs to be revoked from the user.
Have looked at using Commerce module it seems like it may work for what we need. It requires composer though which we do not currently have setup so if you want to use that route be aware of this for time planning.
