Format of Research Proposal

1. Abstract

A brief description of your proposal in no more than 50 words

3. Introduction:

The primary purpose of the introduction is to provide the rationale for your research. A secondary purpose is to attract your readers’ interest in your study. The introduction begins with a general discussion of the topic (your research context) and often ends with a discussion of the particular questions you seek to answer in your study. In short, there are two main sections you should include in the introduction:

• your research (Research Question/s and/or Hypothesis)

• background of topic (includes review of related literature that serves to inform the reader more on your topic)

4. Significance of Performing Research

In this section you will explain why your research is important and deserving of resources (money, people and time). The points you make here are important so make this section robust and convincing. If the reader is not convinced of the research significance in your proposal it is likely that your proposal will be turned down and you will not receive the resources to carry out the research.

**Please note: 5 and 6 can be included in the introductory section of your research proposal as well.

6. Methods

In this section of the research proposal, you should include the following:

• Identify the research method, (how you collected your data, e.g. online survey? Content analysis of Weblogs, interview face-to-face)

• Location of data collection, (interview at Agora Hall, Orchard Road?)

• The sampling design, (how many people you plan to survey)

• How did you gain access to your participants?

• Timeline details (over the weekend or online for 1 week)

8. Resources

In this section you will estimate the resources you will need to carry out your research. Think of all the requirements you may have in the following area:

• Time: How much time do you need to conduct the research? How much time do you need to do the analysis and deliver the findings?

• Money: How much money would you need to carry out the research? Break the cost down using a spreadsheet if needed. (Remember the more money you ask for, the more significant your research should be.)

• People: How many researcher or field staff would you need? Do they need to be experienced or can they be inexperienced?

• Other resources: Access to special records or data?

9. References (not included in the word count)

• Cite all the sources or references used in your report in APA format.

10. Appendices (not included in the word count)

This section sits at the back and is a separate section to include material like supporting documents:

• Includes information that may be of interest to your reader.

• For the purpose of this research project, please include all the articles used in your report.
