Book: The Day of Shelly's Death: The Poetry and Ethnography of Grief by Renato Rosaldo
Instructions:
Word count: 800 minimum – 1000 maximum
Layout: No title page. Double-space, 12pt, Times New Roman font
Citations: In-text citations. Bibliography at the end.
Paragraph structure:
1. Title: See “Book Review Example” on Avenue, under Week Eight.
2. Introduction: Open with a general description of the topic and/or problem addressed by the work in question. Think, if possible, of a hook to draw your readers in. Include a short summary of the author (discipline, name, their expertise).
3. Summary of argument: A short, concise summary of the book’s argument. What is its thesis statement? What do they want you to get out of the book? Also include what research methods they use (ie: anthropological, historical, textual analysis, etc).
4. Summary of contents: The reader needs to know what each chapter covers. Summarize each chapter concisely. 1 paragraph preferable, 2 is ok for longer books. For The Day of Shelly’s Death you can divide the poetry section by date. Your analysis will be focused on 2nd half.
5. Strengths. Analyze and identify 1-2 areas in which you think the book excels. How does it contribute to the scholarly and/or popular study of death?
6. Weakness. Critically analyze the book as a whole, and indicate 1 or 2 areas where you think the book could be improved. Has the author omitted information? Have they neglected something important, or even gotten information wrong?
7. Conclusion. Summarize your opinion of the book (strengths & weaknesses), state who you think would benefit from this book, and re-state the book’s main thesis.
Grading Scheme:
A detailed rubric will be provided for your benefit, and the TAs will use it to grade your reviews. You will be graded on the following, out of 100%
60% - Coherence of your argument, evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, chapter summary.
30% - Grammar, sentence structure, paragraph length, overall coherence.
10% - Following instructions (ie: paragraph structure, font, proper summary).
