Produce a literature review and annotated bibliography (2,500 words). Use the following guidelines to reflect upon the changing face of early years care and education in the UK. 1. Locate and read a range of chapters, articles or documents (4-6) that contain useful information and a variety of differing or competing ideas, theories or views on the topic. i. (How has education/care changed in the UK for this age group 0 – 5 years old?) 2. Using these sources, create an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief paragraph that describes and critically evaluates the source. This is called the annotation and the purpose of this is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy and quality of the sources cited. a. Cite the full reference using Harvard referencing style. b. Write a paragraph (150-200 words) that concisely summarises the central theme and scope of the article/chapter/document. c. Include one or more sentences that: i. Evaluate the authority or background of the author. ii. Comment of the intended audience. iii. Compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or iv. Explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic. Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research. (Compare: how are they the same? Contrast: how are they different?) 3. Now use the variety of ideas, competing views or theories expressed in the annotated bibliography to write a literature review. You will need to bring in a wider range of literature to support and extend your arguments. Use the reminder of the word allowance for this (approx. 1300 – 1900 words). a. Analyse how current theories, policy and practice on this topic have changed and developed over the last century in this country. b. Relate them to the social context of their time and consider their effect on children and their families. (Is there something that would explain the change? i.e. wars, social economic). c. Consider how key people, legislation or policies have impacted current provision and social policy. d. Use citations or direct quotes from the literature to support your analysis, using the Harvard referencing style.
