Objective - To design a CNC 2- axis Plasma Cutting Machine
The machine will make use of a commercial plasma cutting unit designed for use in the home workshop.

• Your design should have a 1m x 1m cutting capability and will be driven by Mach3 CNC software running on a pc.
• The device should be capable of cutting a minimum plate thickness of 16swg steel. (Typically this would require a speed of 150 ipm).
• It should also be able to make faster traverse movements up to a speed of 1000 ipm, with an acceleration of 50 in/s2.
The details of the stepper motor driver (capable of microstepping) will be provided.
You will produce a General Arrangement drawing for the whole machine and detailed design for one axis drive system. The drive must be provided with suitable protection from the cutting process.
Calculations should be produced to show how drive ratios have been arrived at.
The drive will be by stepper motor and an appropriate gear, belt, ballscrew or chain drive arrangement.

Final Submission
Your final submission should consist of the following items:-
1) A solid model of each component.
3) General Arrangement drawing for the whole machine.
4) Appropriate calculations related to the design for one axis drive system.
5) A set of fully dimensioned engineering drawings of all components detailing the design for one axis drive system.
6) A sub-assembly drawing with parts list detailing the design for one axis drive system.
All of the above should be in paper form and assembled into a brief group report with supporting text (1000 words max). In addition all of the CAD files should be provided by the group on a single CD.
