Develop a Magento 2 module to use a different product url

I need certain skus to display the url of a different sku whenever the a link to the product is shown on any page. sku url_key parent_sample_sku final_url_to_display 1200-100 widget /widget 1200-001 widget-001 1200-100 /widget (not /widget-001) so in this example, I need the url for product 1200-001 to point to the url for product 1200-100 wherever it is displayed (only if the value for parent_sample_sku exists). Basically, I have certain skus which I am using to sell samples of the main sku. I do not want anyone to be able to click and view the sample sku page, I only want the main sku visible. So if a sample sku is added to a cart, I want the cart link to go to the main sku. I would like to implement this with a plugin type behavior (or anything else that is simpler). I would prefer not to add entries to the url redirects table or modifying template files. Please note this is for MAGENTO 2, and not magento 1. I would like clean code and using magento best practices (i.e. not using the object manager, etc..). More details can be provided as needed. Thank You.
