We handle around 2000-3000 images annually. Finished picture goes on Amazon. What is required is rotating image to be upright, siloueting the image, cropping the image tightly to (1001 pixels x various) then following the guidelines below to insure the image is accurate for amazon.
1. Correct levels.
Image->Adjustments->Curves.
Choose the white dropper in the dialog box, click on something in your picture that's supposed to be white (like the background).
If you have something in your picture that's supposed to be black, use the black eyedropper as well to select something black - makes colors nice and vivid.
Choose OK to close the dialog box.
2. Select the background.
Select your item pretty close to the edges. (You can use the Magic Wand Tool or the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop.)
Now invert the selection so that you have everything BUT your product selected: Select->Inverse
Feather the edges a few pixels: Select->Modify->Feather - on a good sized photo, 5 pixels is usually enough.
3. Fill the background with pure white.
Now fill the selected area -- which is everything except your item -- with pure white: Edit->Fill->Use white, Blending mode normal, Opacity 100%.
4. Crop the photo to size.
If you still have the background selected, Select->Inverse so that your item is selected
Then expand it by several pixels using Select->Modify->Expand by 10 pixels
Then crop using Image->Crop.
5. Save as a JPEG for Amazon.
File->Save for Web->JPEG Medium

I use a vector approach to removing the background instead of just Magic Wand,
Eraser so you will have a far better edge quality. I can also adjust the colors, tones etc.
