Hi So would you like to copy their design? or maybe modify it because you wouldn't use that LCD? also I noticed they did not really know what they were doing.. they used a ft232 chip to connect it to a computer but the microcontroller they used has an integrated USB port... the general layout could be modified. I would design a GUI on the computer using python and the kivy library. contact me so we can discuss details further.

Using raspberry pi will be best option to complete this project but if you want to the price to be less you can use esp8266 wifi module we can discuss project in more details if you are interested thank you
