Topics: In a 10-page research paper, you will choose one of the following questions to answer: • How does the novel “Indian Horse” help us understand sport in Canadian society? • Why is sport considered a “microcosm” of Canadian society rather than a “reflection” of it? • How does “intersectionality” help us understand sport in Canadian society? Expectations: Regardless of the question chosen, you WILL BE EXPECTED to incorporate: A. Material from the novel Indian Horse, which I will attach the book as PDF. The novel is pretty easy to read and you should be able to finish it within half a day or so. B. Class lectures, and outside sources. There are 13 weeks in this course and each week a different topic has been discussed, which I will provide the lecture slides from each week. The concepts are pretty straightforward and easy to understand and if a concept has not been explained well enough, you could simply use either Wikipedia or Google to fully understand it. Or even ask myself and I will provide you with enough information about it. Also, all the concepts of microcosm, reflection, and intersectionality are in the lecture slides. C. In order to understand the novel and the lecture slides, I have attached the course syllabus as well. So before you begin, first read the course description and understand what this course is about. D. This research paper is 40% of my final mark and I have read all the materials and contents, so I will very carefully review these expectations to have been addressed in the paper, otherwise I will not be accepting it. E. Also, this paper will be submitted online and I will need you to use proper APA citation to avoid any plagiarism and you should submit a proof and report. Writing Instruction: This paper will have a research component and a reflection component and you should include the following criteria in this paper: 1. A statement of argument. In other words, “The novel Indian Horse helps us understand sport in Canadian society because…” or “Sport is considered a microcosm of Canadian society rather than a reflection of it because…” While you do not have to use this formula to make your argument, your statement of argument should be clearly identifiable. 2. Explanation of key terms of ideas from class. Any terms or ideas used in your paper (such as “intersectionality” or “microcosm versus reflection”) should be well explained. This is my opportunity to show my knowledge comprehension, since there is no final for this course and this 40% paper is basically my final. 3. Examples from the novel.
