POWERPOINT PRESENTATION Nursing Practice & Health Care: An Historical Perspective A PowerPoint project based on information acquired from archived and historical literature PPT Presentation Guidelines Project purpose: to provide the historical background and evolution of a nursing practice topic you may be thinking about for your evidence based service learning project. The focus may also be an individual eminent nurse from the past whose work has impacted or influenced a particular area of nursing practice today. Select a topic or eminent nurse of the past that either relates to your current topical interest in nursing practice, something you find especially interesting that may inform practice today, or impacted current practice. Some possible topical areas may relate to public/community health, nurse physician relations, military nurses & nursing, nursing education, contraception, health risks and behaviors such as smoking, diseases *(polio, TB), the emergence of Nurse Practitioners, critical care units, etc). Individuals might include Lillian Wald (The Henry Street Settlement- community health), Mary Breckinridge (Frontier Nursing Service- nurse midwifery), Adelaide Nutting (education), etc. *During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, community health nurses were actively involved with TB, case finding, case management, etc. Also, the role of the community/public health nurse has roots in the very early practice of nurses. Two particular organizations (The Henry Street Settlement & Frontier Nursing Service) still in existence today, were developed by nurses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries). You may already have a topic in mind-- this project will provide the early background on your topic, its evolution, and how it informs practice today. If not, it may spark an interest in a particular area of practice. Conduct a search of the internet for sources, literature, and information to include in your presentation. Analyze and synthesize the information you have retrieved and reviewed, applying it to nursing practice today ? its impact/significance and how it informed current nursing practice and health care. Select at least one image from one of the internet sources and use in your presentation. (example: the NLM has a downloadable image of a nurse standing next to an iron long (polio)?in addition, the NLM has significant holdings of nurses and nursing images (an earlier assignment). Also, the AAHN website has a number of images you should be able to download as well as internet sources for you to use. The Frontier Nursing Service and Henry Street Settlement both have histories and images on their websites. Use your creativity in selecting an image. The image might also be one of an eminent nurse from the past (Lillian Wald, Florence Nightingale, Margaret Sanger (contraception), Adelaide Nutting (education) - to name a few).
