Patient nursing.
My sympathy for a suffering person and my ability to
empathise with his/her predicament have always stood out.
My parents recognised my humanity and purchased medical equipment for me
to play with while I was a child.
The women in my family had taught me so much that by my 12th. year, I could
care for any human form; from a one hour old infant to a one hundred
year old person.
I come from a very large extended family. My education in care taking was completely practical. There was always a new baby in the family.
There was always some uncle or auntie dying from old age.
My journey to a career in nursing began with my joining of the Red Cross service at my college. I learned more about the human body and the conditions that it heals well under.
I learned even more about the frailty of our humanity and the frailty of our psychology. University professors educate doctors about this frailty.
It is not a doctor's professional responsibility, however, to provide the care that is necessary
to heal a patient's mind or his/her humanity.
I have deduced from the anguish that most family members exhibit at a patient's suffering
that they would gladly provide this remedy if they knew enough about it.
The damage to the patient's humanity or his/her psychology usually occurs while the patient
is with his/her family.
The increase in the incidence of attention seeking, self harming, casual intoxication and suicide is evidence that we are not being humane enough with each other.
If we do not receive enough love, humanity and compassion, we grow up with a psychology that is devoid of an understanding of love, humanity or compassion.
We have not enough love, enouh human warmth or enough compassion for ourselves.
We do not perceive ourselves as being worthy.
A person with no love, respect or compassion for him/herself has none to spare for any other person.
It is neither wickedness nor malice. There is no compassion there for him/her to donate.
There has never been any warmth there.
In the United Kingdom, in a so called civilized society, two women are killed each week.
Each one by her mate.
5 million of our children starve to death each year.
Our pets suffer from obesity. Our humanity is dangerously damaged.
The remedy is compassion.
It occurred to me that patient nursing is the profession that requires the largest input
of compassion. I chose patient nursing as a vocation.
I nurse patients for neither the money nor the fame.
I can make the maximum contribution to people's humanity through it.
In a hospital, there is zero disguise, zero pretence and zero deceit.
The amount of private information that a patient contributes to a conversation with me is an accurate measure of the quality of my patient nursing.
While I heal the wounds on his/her body, I heal his/her humanity.
It is to serve this purpose that I chose patient nursing.
