Essentially, religion is harmful both to progress and the populace, while labeling itself as a bringer of peace. Do you really think that you bring peace by murdering those opposed to it? No, you don't; you get the crusades, a fierce war machine fighting in the name of... peace. Makes sense, right? No, it doesn't, at all. Remember how Nazi Germany was peaceful once? Yes, that was for eight years; then the final solution kicked in. You know where that went. And if you *think* a book is right, you should confirm it with other books, and be very, very open to opposing opinions and the facts and data behind those.
