I've done this same project for an image viewer using opencv and hdf5 as an image format. What is your image format(s)? What is you input and output requirements? Can I assume an input filename and an output directory to write file to? How many levels do you need? Does this need to be integrated into a larger application? I assume this is for an image viewer. Is a python command line tool sufficient or do you want an API you can import into a larger project? I propose using opencv and the python threading library.
