Hello, My name is Guru, I am an Office 365 consultant and Microsoft Partner. I have worked as a Technical Lead, Trainer, SME for Microsoft Office 365 Support Team (Tier 2) for 5 years. I have been assisting multiple Microsoft Customers and Support Engineers on migration planning and issues. As I understand, you want to setup a split domain scenario for your domain, so that you can use both your old hosting and Office 365 simultaneously till you migrate mailboxes to Office 365. And as you say correctly this can be achieved by setting up DNS records for your domain. We can keep the MX record "as is" pointing towards servage. And few manual steps that we will have to take from end users perspective to connect to their Office 365 mailboxes. Setting up the records correctly, planning and implementing, should not take long (2-3 hours maximum). However, the replication of DNS changes, may take awhile depending on the DNS provider.
