Network Design with ns2 (Report)

The School of Computing in Made-Up University is replacing its building and during the process upgrading its network and network services. You should design the network topology for the new building. They have had problems with internal failures in the past therefore they have the following requirements for their network: 1. resilient to failure 2. easily maintainable 3. easily expandable The School of Computing at MUU have been provided with one 100 Mbps external link by the Universitys IT department. Your report should include the following items: 1. your network design - which meets the requirements of resilience, main- tainable and expandability 2. a robust analysis that shows your design meets the requirements In order to robustly test your network design you should use ns2. You do not need to test your design for more than 1 hour of simulated time - the time for a single lab or lecture. The school has left room for growth so only 50% of its offices seats are used. At any one time only 50% of the lab space is in use. For ease of testing you may assume that the only application in use is WWW to external websites - the cache and server should be placed outside of the Schools network. Report (Size: 4000 words, 16 pages including diagrams & screenshots) 2. ns2 files Things to consider Running a large simulation in ns2 can be time consuming and create very large trace files if you use the trace-all command. I suggest you either use the spe- cific method for tracing or only trace the packet flows at specific nodes in your network - for example at specific key routers. You can use low network link band- widths during the development of your network simulation in order to speed up the testing only once you are happy with your design should be run it at the full link speeds. Performing an experiment just once doesnt give you a sounds basis for a conclusion you will therefore need to perform any performance experiment multiple times in order to perform a robust analysis of the performance. Scenario The School of Computing, Made-Up University (MUU1 ) has recently received funding to create a new building which will house all of their teaching and research. The degree programmes are • BSc Computing • BSc Network Computing • MSc Distributed Systems • MSc Software Engineering • MSc Artificial Intelligence The building has been designed with the intention that the school will be able to grow in the future. The office space has been designed so that each office can accommodate more than one person, although it is expected that some offices will house one person. The building will consist of three floor. Ground floor This is a predominately teaching floor. It consists of the following: • One 120 seat lab - this lab can also be used for lectures • One 40 seat lab • Two 20 seat labs • One 3 seat school office • One 3 seat technicians office • One machine room First floor This floor consists of both teaching and research staff. It consists of the follow- ing: • One 80 seat lab - this lab can also be used for lectures • Three seminar rooms • Five 3 seat offices • Two 4 seat offices • Fifteen 2 seat offices • One wiring cabinet Second floor This floor is a mix of teaching and research staff. It consists of the following: • Two 20 seat lecture rooms • Two seminar rooms • Five 3 seat offices • Two 4 seat offices • Fifteen 2 seat offices • One wiring cabinet They have decided to deploy a wireless LAN throughout the build for both staff and student use. The WLAN must be secure and authenticated.
