Format: APA It will have - Situation Definition (S1) - Analysis (S2) - Decision (S3) 1) The Situation Definition (S1) Step 1: Describe the Facts and identify the relevant conflicting values and principles implicated in this ethical dilemma. (vary from case to case, e.g. truth telling, right to privacy, conflict of interest, fairness, justice, loyalty, harm to others, confidentiality ...) Step 2: Clear Statement of the Ethical Question or Issue involved. (specific question, not general!) 2) Analysis of the Situation (S2) - Discussion, pro and con, of the various conflicting values and principles - Eexamination of factors external to the case situation itself that might influence the direction of moral judgment (external factor: one that was there before the dilemma and will most likely be there after. e.g. company policy, legal constraints, demographics) - Eexamine the various individuals and groups likely to be affected by your ethical judgments - Apply ethical theories to the moral dilemma - examine the issue from the perspective of consequence-based theory, duty-based ethics and Aristotle’s golden mean. (Apply all of them! if one does not fit, you have to mention it!) 3) Decision (S3) make a decision and defend your recommendation Your decision should have an appeal to one or more of the moral theories. Some parts may be somewhat redundant, but this will serve to reinforce your arguments and allow you to justify them with greater moral certainty.
