I looked at your two examples and the problem I found with the BBC solution is that if you decrease the width of your browser window, the time scale doesn't change, so you see less and less time. If your screen is very small, you may only be able to see one hour. The other example handles it better. Both solutions use CSS to organize the data, because that's what modern webpages are supposed to do.
