NGINX Help for redirecting with ssl

My current network setup is Gateway -> IPFire Linux Firewall -> VPS with NGINX routing to 20 separate VPS's each containing different types of websites and backends databases etc. I am having trouble forwarding SSL secure connections all the way through. I am not sure if it is because the firewall. I have set 443 to forward just like port 80 to the NGINX VPS. everything port 80 redirects correctly, but nothing SSL secure will route through, ive tried just setting it to forward the port and hosting the cert on the vps hosting the site, as well as hosting the cert on this VPS.
