Estimated duration: 1 day or less Industry: Internet/Software Description of support work: Need someone with a better understanding of Linux file systems than me to advise how to resize a partition on our Linux server. We have a 2TB drive (dev/sdb) currently mounted to two 1TB partitions (sdb1, sdb2). We need to adjust the sizing so the second partition (sdb2) is 1.5 TB, and the first (sdb1) is 500GB. See output from df and fdisk below. You will see that sdb2 is full at 100%. I cannot provide remote access to the server, so I am looking for someone to walk me through this job over Skype or email. This must only be done if you are 100% confident this will be done without any loss of data. Hi Changing of physical partitions is very dangerous and not 100% gurante your data is not loss. I have better purpose. I can teach you how to setup new server with LVM management, which allow safety partition resizing and transfer your data from old to new one.

Hello, this is NOT a bid, as long as not stated otherwise, but there's not way to contact you without bidding on the project... And this won't be the final price/hour. You can't expand the filesystem you have on sdb. That's because filesystems can only be expanded by adding space to them at the END (!). This comes from the fact that the FAT (File Allocation Table), is located at the beginning of the filesystem. So shrinking sdb1 and extending sdb2 to the space in front of it won't work... But there's a solution to everything: - stop anything accessing /var/www/vhosts and /obs - create a directory /x - umount /var/www/vhosts - mount /dev/sdb1 to /x - go to /x and create another subdirectory, call it vhosts - now in /x move everything to /x/vhosts like this: mv * vhosts - now delete the directory /var/www/vhosts - now link /x/vhosts to /var/www/vhosts ln -s /x/vhosts /var/www/vhosts - now start the services again that accessed /var/www/vhosts - check that everything is working - now create /x/obs - now check in /obs for a subdirectory, or multiple subdirectories that use enough space (something like 200GB) - copy those directories to /x/obs/ - delete those directories in /obs - link /x/obs/* to /obs/* - restart the services accessing /obs again - have 200GB free space in /obs and enough time to think about partitoning your new harddrive and using a volume manager next time. Enjoy the weekend. KR, Oliver

Hello. More 20 years programming experience. Only one can guarantee data saving - having empty space for full backup. If you can provide it, I can do your job. If/when we come to agreement I suggest estimate full task, not per hourly rate. Regards. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi. I did successful resizing of linux partitons (with ext4 too). I know several ways to do this, but it depends on the requirements and on the server's situation. Like is there LVM? Can it be rebooted from a Live CD for the time of resizing the partions? I would be glad to know more information about the case and of course I would be very happy to help you. Best Regards.

This is easy with the right tools (gparted). For future builds however, when you need to setup a new server look into using LVM. It gives you tremendous flexibility especially when you don't know beforehand the size your filesystems need to be. Some outline of the process: 1) shrink the filesystem on /var/www/vhosts 2) shrink the partitton /devsdb1 3) enlarge the partition of /dev/sdb2 4) move the filesystem of /obs to its new start; * this is the critical moment and it will take a long time (needs to copy 810 GB) 5) enlarge the filesystem of /obs There are risks involved with this, and a proper backup is highly recommended !

Hi, going through your description it does not look like you have the option to extend a partition. There are so many tools but none are guaranteed to work and a data loss is always expected. I have a different solution proposal which goes like this. First we will need the disk usage details of the partition which is full and then we can move the partition to the other partition and create a symlink to it if its required to be accessed from the older location. thanks Vishwa

Hi, I am proffessional linux administrator who has broad experience with resizing ext3, reiserfs and ext4 filesystems. In addition to that I have 3 years of experience as a storage administrator of 4 enterprise storage systems at a size of 60-100 TB each, so I am quite confident with partitioning, redundancy, filesystems set up, RAID mirroring, changing faulty disks, attaching/detaching disks to/from RAID mirrors, checking filesystem and repairing errors on filesystems. My approach to your Project: Althought the risk of data corruption is very low, I will recommend you to prepare a backup of /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb2 or at least to a backup of the partition that will be shrinked - /dev/sdb1. 1. I will guide you through skype, you choose the way of communication wheather voice or written 2. You will have to unmount /dev/sdb1 before shrinking the filesystem. After the filesystem is shrinked, you can resize the disk 3. Resize /dev/sdb2 to 1.5 TB, write the partition table and then resize the filesystem of /dev/sdb2 What I will expect from you is to have a reliable method for testing the information on both partitions. For instance, if you have a database on /dev/sdb2 you can prepare the output of some quiries before resizing and run the same quieries after the change and compare the results. Regards, D. Vitkova
